What does BarleyCo propose?
Due to production of paper from wood fibers, 3-million-hectare forests are lost every year and this number keep increasing every second. In 2025, the demand for sustainable packaging is assumed to reach up to 1.5 trillion dollars and 30% of the consumers consider sustainability when they are purchasing goods. Companies should lessen the pressure on forests as a raw material for packaging.
Turkey is an agricultural country and taking a step towards sustainable packaging by using alternative raw materials such as straws of barley and wheat, enable us to produce bio-degradable products without using wood-based cellulose fibers that are mainly imported. While doing that, we produce locally and lessen our carbon footprint.

By using agricultural by products as raw material, we are saving 17 trees that would have been cut for the production of 1 tons of paper pulp,
Barley straws are annual plants that can be harvested every year. However, an industrial tree grows at least in 5 years.
Compared to wood fibers, barley straw fibers can be treated with less chemicals than wood.
In Turkey, the need of cellulose is 8.5 million tons and 4.5 million tons of it is imported, remaining 4 million tons are appearing as market gap.
In Turkey, there are no pulp mills using annual plant straws which have usable amount of around 7 million tons that can be used in pulp industry.
